The headline number is ₹78,000, but that is the ceiling, not the default. The scheme pays ₹30,000 for the first kW, another ₹30,000 for the second and ₹18,000 for the third — so a 2 kW system draws ₹60,000 and anything above 3 kW still draws ₹78,000. The money arrives in your own bank account after inspection, not as a discount on the invoice, which is worth knowing before you plan your cash flow.

Your bill tells you almost everything you need. Take the units consumed over the last twelve months, divide by twelve, then divide again by about 120 — that is roughly the kW a Nagpur rooftop needs to cover it. The number that matters after that is usable shadow-free area, because a 3 kW system needs roughly 200 square feet clear of water tanks, parapets and the neighbour's mango tree at 3 pm in December.

A net meter runs both ways. During the day your system pushes surplus units into the grid and the meter counts them; at night you draw from the grid and it counts those too. You are billed on the difference. This is why an oversized system is rarely a good buy for a household: beyond a point you are exporting units you will never draw back within the settlement period.

Dust on glass is not a cosmetic problem. A washing visit costs a fraction of what those lost units are worth over a quarter, which is why it belongs in a maintenance schedule rather than on your to-do list.

On-grid or hybrid: when a battery is worth the money

Batteries roughly double the cost per kW and do not attract the residential subsidy, so the honest answer for most homes with a stable supply is that you do not need one. Where a hybrid earns its place is a site with frequent long cuts, or a household running medical equipment. The right approach is to size the battery to essential loads only — lights, fans, a fridge, a router — not the whole house.

Six questions to ask any solar installer before you pay an advance

Ask for the module and inverter make and model in writing. Ask who does the electrical work and whether they hold a contractor licence. Ask what the DC cable rating is. Ask who files the subsidy claim. Ask what the workmanship warranty covers, separately from the manufacturer warranty. And ask for a site to visit — any installer with a year of work behind them will have one nearby.
